(Not even expensive CAD tools manage to guarantee this.) The main reason why this breaks down is that there is no real way to have a guarantee that a particular face stays as is in the original body. This is however not how one works in 3d modeling. In it, the "Import External Geometry" Icon will have a drop down menu, in which you can select "Import defining geometry", or select previously imported geometry and change it to defining geometry, like you would do with regular lines.Yes it might seem tempting to use features like faces of other bodies as the input for something else. These, as well as all lines that are constrained to these lines will be parametric, so scaling the original object will scale the sketch and resulting objects as well.Īs far as I am aware, using imported external geometry lines as defining geometry currently only works with Realthunders branch as well. You can toggle "import defining geometry" and the selected edges will be treated as "real" lines and not just construction lines. If you want to go with this, and especially if you want to change the "parent" object afterwards, I highly recommend using Realthunders branch which I linked above, or you'll likely get problems due to the topological naming problem. These, as well as all lines that are constrained to these lines will be parametric, so scaling the original object will scale the sketch and resulting objects as well. Edges which are not on the same plane than the sketch will be treated as a 2d projection of the edge on the plane of the sketch. In the sketch, you can import geometry of other objects. You may have to create a datumplane and position it in the right spot for the sketch to be in the right position. In PartDesign, create a new body, make a sketch and select the edges of the object you want. I also use PartDesign, not sure whether Part would work similarly. I do this in Realthunders branch, where a lot of it is relatively automated.
This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but maybe it helps: You may still run into issues from time to time, but they are greatly reduced. I recommend using Realthunders Branch, which mitigates the issue somewhat.
